Our Favourite Month - September!

September is a brilliant month for many reasons. It’s Sara’s birthday (and she likes to make a big deal out of birthdays…), the weather is always fantastic as with this Indian summer, and the children are extracted from ankles and deposited in the welcoming bosom of their schools. It’s still light in the evening, but its not too hot. You can still drink a cool beer in a pub garden but there’s the routine of work and school to keep the hedonism at bay, with the promise of Autumnal long walks and pub roasts just over the horizon. And the Jurassic Coast quietens down, a new-pencil-case-back-to-school vibe that has had us rising at sunrise for swims in the Lyme Bay.

And we cook, of course. Now that we can finally juggle the one hot plate instead of twelve spinning ones, we are delighted to be cooking for you all our wonderful guests in this deliciously warm and calm month.

This week, we’re at the Wellbeing by the Lakes festival, cooking kofte kebabs and halloumi with salads of jewelled bulgur wheat and smoked and spiced veggies from our gardens. Have a look at our Instagram to see how beautiful and calm it is.

This Friday our Feast night is sold out, and we’ll be harvesting again for that - including from our three sisters corn beds, and inviting our guests for cocktails and canapés, and a five course tasting menu under the stars, warmed up with fire pits and sheepskins.

Sunday brings our Taste East Devon steak masterclass and lunch (2 tickets remain) with Bloody Marys and retro prawn cocktail, ex-dairy beef and all the sides, for a sweltering demonstration, fire pit snacks and delicious lunch.

Then next week, with more glorious sunshine forecast we host our last outdoor Fire Supper of the year on Wednesday 13th. We’ll be eating crispy fire-roast Hebridean lamb with HG lettuce wraps and hoi sin sauce, shrimp fried rice and stir fried greens, and of course our home-made prawn crackers. We’re cutting the first of our HG rhubarb because they have sprouted babies galore, for pud.

Then we have our Full Day Fire School on Saturday 16th (2 spaces remain), our Steak Half Day Fire School on Wednesday 20th.

Our wellbeing offering is also here to restore you after the chaos of Summer too, providing down to earth, practical and pragmatic rest in our calm and beautiful woodland.

Our focus is on fun, creativity and play; and managing our stress levels through nervous system regulation and relaxation. We hosted Lisa Monger at Rebel Health’s brilliant Elements Retreat where we had - for the first time - an ice bath in the woods. We can’t wait to work with Lisa more so watch this space. We have Natalie Vallely’s wonderful Women’s Circle on Thursday 14th September, a Face Yoga workshop on Sunday 17th and a Sweet Treats Essential Oils workshop on Thursday 21st.

Yoga with Ella McConnell and Pilates with Emma Roberts continues on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and our Nourish and Bloom Escapes are available to book now.

So wherever you are - throwing yourself in a back to work declutter mode, or trying to claw back some sleep after a hectic summer - we’ll find what you need.
