Land

The High Grange Estate spans 3 acres with 62 mature trees, maintained with consideration to climate change.

The woodland at High Grange is managed sustainably, employing specialist East Devon tree surgeons to carry out any works.

Our beautiful outdoor feasting table and our bar top are built from an oak tree that required felling.

We have recycled an old septic tank to become a rainwater storage facility harvesting rain water from house gutters. This stored rainwater will be used to water the veggie patch, bee-friendly flowers and woodland, meaning we massively reduce our water consumption.

We have built a large compost area for garden and food waste. The compost is used on our veggie patches and the veg is served up at our events.

We also have a wormery which uses kitchen waste to recycle into compost.

Food

Ethical sourcing is at the core of the High Grange ethos.

Where possible we always cook with local produce from our glorious East Devon larder. We always feel we can cook not within a 25 mile radius but in 5!

We grow our own veggies and have our own small flock of chooks who gift us delicious eggs.

We source fish from the Lyme Bay, caught with nets on day boats and eaten within a day or two, and buy meat from sustainable suppliers, such as ex-dairy beef from Meat Matters and local goose from Kilmington.

Plastic

We are working to reduce our plastic consumption. By growing more of our own produce and buying from the market we eliminate plastic packaging on our veg.

We like to buy large cuts of meat and whole fish which means less packaging than for individual items.

We use reusable takeaway containers and we are on the look-out for the most ethical, sustainable packaging.

Fire

We use fallen wood from our land where possible and otherwise source wood locally that is kiln-dried efficiently and comes from managed forests.

Renewable Energy

We are working towards adding solar panels to our roof in order to generate our own electricity. We use Octopus Energy which uses 100% green electricity.

We are also personally looking to upgrade our cars to EVs and would like to input an EV charger for our guests to use as soon as we can.

People

We couldn’t do any of this without our wonderful staff. We hire local employees, pay above industry standards fair wages and we endeavour to offer good working conditions and encourage our staff to thrive. We provide regular training on sustainability and waste management.

We are keen to support local projects and have done a charity event for ARC in Axminster, and volunteered for the Lyme Regis Food Bank. We have plans for more charitable collaborations, including teaching and community projects.
