FAQs
I HAVE QUESTIONS BEFORE BOOKING:
Do you do private events? We do! Take a look at our private events and catering page here and do get in touch if you have any questions or would like a bespoke quote.
I have mobility requiements: please get in touch before booking if you have accessibility requirements. We are a small business and moving across grass and gravel is necessary at all of our events. We want to welcome everyone and with some planning we hope to be able to accommodate your needs so please do contact us.
Can my partner come along on the Fire School day? Part of the joy of Fire School is collaborating with the other guests and coming together as a community at the end to feast on your well-earned gains! We find it does tend to change the dynamic if partners attend the final feast. We would therefore ask that you either invite them to join you for the full day or if they would like to join for a drink at the end of the day they should feel free to!
Can children attend? Fire School courses and our Feast Nights are normally for those aged 16+ but do let us know if you’d like to bring someone younger as we may be able to accommodate. For day time and private events we welcome children and we know they will love our woodland playground.
Can I bring my dog? We have no problem with dogs but other guests might and we have free ranging chicken and ducks! We accept well-behaved dogs but they must be on a lead at all times and we ask that they stay in your car during meal times or when other guests request it.
Do you sell gift vouchers? We do! Please look here for our selection. You can choose for us to send the voucher out in the post or you can print it off at home.
GETTING HERE
Where is High Grange? Our address is Burrow Knapp Way, Dalwood, Near Axminster, Devon EX13 7ES. We are located above Burrow Farm Gardens if coming from the A35, or just before it if coming from Somerset. Use “High Grange Devon” in Google or Apple Maps to find. us.
Do I need a car to get to High Grange? Ideally although it is possible without a car with a little planning. Axminster (5 miles) and Honiton (7 miles) are towns with train stations and taxis but we strongly advise you to book taxis in advance. By train, Axminster to London Waterloo is direct and 2h40m and Axminster to Exeter is 35 mins.
Where can I stay? We have suggestions for some lovely places here. You’ll find plenty on Airbnb and Booking.com. Lyme Regis is 15 mins drive and is a gorgeous seaside town although there are plenty of beautiful spots in all of the neighbouring towns and villages including in Dalwood itsel
Do you offer camping? Unfortunately our insurance won’t allow us to accommodate overnight camping in a campervan or similar. However, do email us and we may be able to help in this regard, and there is a lovely campsite just down the road.
I have a campervan - there is a lovely campsite just down the road where you can stay with your campervan.
I’M COMING TO AN EVENT:
What time does the event start? You will get an information email approximately one week before the event with all the information you’ll need but please check on your booking information or the event calendar listing here for the event start and finish times. If you’re still unsure then please email us.
Where will I park? Please park in our car park which is inside the second gate on the left. We have a gravel parking area to the left for around 10 cars, and a woodchip carpark to the right. If possible, share lifts and make sure you don’t park on the grass unless you want to get towed out by a local farmer the next day! Please let a member of staff know if you need any help parking.
I’d like to get a taxi: We use the taxis below. For group coaches, try Sewards who are based in our village and know us well. For Feast and Fire Supper nights please book your taxi by 11pm latest.

Do you accept cash? We don’t keep cash on site so please pay by card. Tips for our waiting staff can be on card or by cash.
What happens in bad weather? We will cook and eat outside in practically any weather. For our Feasts we can move inside to our lovely Shippen barn if the weather is poor. Fire Schools are always outside but we have some shelter so we will only cancel if the weather is truly awful! Come prepared for all eventualities (dig out the long johns if you need!).
What should I wear? High Grange gives the opportunity to be immersed in nature so please dress for it! You will be outside for at least some of the event (and all of it at a Fire School) - bring layers and sturdy footwear and sun cream in the summer!
FOOD AND DRINK
What will the menu be? The style of food is dependent on the type of event but we offer the same high quality ingredients and techniques for all, and we cook outside over fire and wood. The details of feasts and courses are a guide - each will be different depending on the season and what produce is the very best that week or even that day!
What if I follow a particular diet? At our dining events we we can always accommodate all dietary requirements, whether you are vegan, vegetarian, gluten free or you just can’t tolerate coriander! Please let us know at least a week in advance as we may not be able to cater for you if you tell us on the day. At our Fire Schools we can’t always accommodate different diets as cooking meat and fish is part of the day so please do check before booking. For our Takeaways we don’t offer dietary alternatives at the moment.
What drinks are available? We have a carefully crafted organic and biodynamic wine list with hyper-local beers, cocktails and soft drinks available for purchase. We like to support local businesses and producers working with the environment in mind and our drinks offering reflects this.
Do you serve decaffeinated options? We include coffee and tea and a selection of herbal teas at all of our events. We have decaf options available upon request.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
I need to cancel: Please contact us if you need to cancel an event place. With notice, we’ll offer you a voucher valid for 6 months. Because we buy all our fresh and seasonal food in advance of events, cancellations within 1 week of a Feast or Fire Supper, and 2 weeks of Fire School, are non-refundable. You are welcome to gift your space to someone else and inform us of the change of details and we will also do our best to find a replacement from our waiting list.
Will High Grange ever cancel? In exceptional circumstances we may need to cancel an event for circumstances out of our control. We reserve the right to do so. Participants will be offered a full refund or voucher for a different date. We regret that we cannot accept responsibility for any other travel, accommodation or miscellaneous costs incurred.
