The Jurassic Coast & A Competition to Win a Jurassic Feast App Subscription

High Grange lies in the middle of the Jurassic Coast. That’s the coastline that stretches from Exmouth in Devon to Swanage in Dorset, with Lyme Regis, the “Pearl of Dorset” in the middle. The South West Coast Path rises and falls dramatically along its golden cliffs.

It is the home of fossils, a World Heritage Site where you can find ammonites and other relics from the past, around cliffs trodden by Lyme local Mary Anning all those years ago. The Charmouth Heritage Centre is a great place to visit.

It is the home of great literature - from Hardy’s Far From The Madding Crowd to Jane Austen’s Persuasion; and a cinematic dream, with The French Lieutenant’s Woman filmed on the Cobb, as was last year’s Wonka.

And inland, there are the Blackdown Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (High Grange is within it), one of the less well known areas, perhaps because it spans both Somerset and Devon, with rolling fields and farmland seen from our woodland kitchen.

And we haven’t even talked about food. We have a lot to thank Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and his River Cottage (10 minutes from HG), whose seasonal, sustainable cooking paved the way for us all. And, importantly, it has given us its alumni all with their own fantastic culinary ventures.

When we were planning to move here we knew nothing about Lyme at all, but soon realised a few things straight away - the schools are brilliant, the beaches and coastline mindblowingly beautiful with pastel skies and rugged cliffs, and the food is absolutely banging.

There’s Hix of course, with the best view in town over the Harbour, and Harriet Mansell with her innovative and refined food. There’s more though -the Strawberry Tree with its Gibraltan roots and laid back venue, Poco Pizza for sourdough pizza overlooking the beach, and Soulshine is hitting it out of the park in Bridport. We mention these three because we’re delighted to say we’re doing collaborations with them (more soon!) but there’s also not room to give a nod to everyone here - from the best producers, suppliers and chefs. We always say we don’t need to do a 25 mile radius for ingredients, we can probably do it in 5.

It’s all so good that we almost want to keep it a secret, but we’ve teamed up with Jurassic Feast, who have created a “must have” app for any foodie visiting the area. It gives Subscribers unique incentives in the form of discounts, offers and promotions that rewards them with savings while supporting the local economy. It showcases the best foodie places in Lyme and its surrounds.

The partners are amazing - there’s us of course, but also Baboo the best ice cream in Lyme, Red Panda and its beach baos, and the best drinks at Gilt & Flint and the Lyme Bay Winery as well as Curious Kombucha (we stock these all at HG). You can find a full list of all the businesses featured and find out more here.

We are delighted to offer you the chance to win one of 10 free 6 month subscriptions so our lucky winners can get the most out of their stay here. To enter, you need to follow us on Instagram or Facebook, like and share this Jurassic Feast Competition post, and comment with what you plan to do on your visit here (obviously after coming to see us!). If you’re not on social media you can just email us on hello@highgrangedevon.com. Entries must be received by 5pm on Monday 6th March and we’ll select 10 lucky winners at random - just in time for your Easter hols!

If you want to download the app (links available at www.jurassicfeast.com) at a later date when you come to visit, it’s just £5 for 2 weeks, so you can use the discount codes at just about all the best places to go out (including us!). Have a look at our “Stay” page for more ideas of places to stay and things to do in the area, and do contact us if you’d like us to plan a bespoke weekend for you - swimming in the Lyme Bay? Foraging in the Blackdown Hills? Mackerel Fishing? Cooking Class & Private Feast? Yoga & Breathwork? We can curate the best retreat for you and your friends or colleagues so get in touch!

Lots of love, Sara and Luke xx
