Cookbook Club Special with Kathy Slack - A Masterclass on Growing Your Own Veg with a 3 course meal inspired by "From the Veg Patch"

We are delighted to welcome the brilliant Kathy Slack to our Cookbook Club as a special event on Wednesday 13th April.

Ever since Luke and Kathy did a demo together at Borough Market in London, we’ve been inspired (as was everyone watching!) at her story of leaving a stressful job in London and avoiding breakdown by moving to the Cotswolds countryside in 2012 and getting her hands in the soil. She learned to grow her own organic vegetables, and retrained as a chef.

She now grows vegetables in her garden, creates the most amazing recipes, teaches cooking classes and and hosts a monthly supper club in the name of Gluts and Gluttony. It is all inspired by her garden finds, particularly the gluts! Her down to earth, comprehensive videos on growing your own veg kept me going through lockdown and inspired me to create my own veggie patch at High Grange.

We run an outdoor cooking business at High Grange but we’re keen not to pander to stereotypes of men standing round a barbecue talking about brisket and drinking beer (although that does happen here too!). We believe in modern, British barbecue, equally for the girls, where vegetables zing over charcoal and smoke as much as a low n’ slow cooked joint of meat. Kathy is a wonderful and exciting addition to our 2022 events.

So on 13th April, we will begin at 11am in the High Grange vegetable patch. Gulp - I know! I’m in my third season of growing and it is giving me a kick up the bottom to get my veg patch looking as good as it can. It is a beautiful spot to sit, right next to Neville the rooster and his ladies, with a view over rolling hills and fields, and next to our outdoor kitchen and dining area. We’ll have the Big Green Egg Minimax with us and Luke and Kathy will demonstrate cooking techniques and share tips. We’ll then seat you at our outdoor oak table for a delicious 3 course meal inspired by From The Veg Patch.

Cookbook Club Special with Kathy Slack is on Wednesday 13th April (Easter hols!) 11am to 3pm and will encompass a full veg growing masterclass, demo and 3 course lunch. Tickets are £75 and vouchers can be redeemed against total cost. Book here.

Kathy won The Young British Foodies Vegetable award and the Soil Association Best Blog award in 2019, and was also shortlisted for a Guild of Food Writers Award. Her debut cookbook, From the Veg Patch, came out in June 2021.

  • my veg patch does not look like this just yet, but apparently weeds are excellent ground cover…
